Regular price $130

Join Gabriela Martínez Ortiz of Ofelia y Antelmo for her first in-person workshop in the US at Indigo & Violet Studio!

Intuitive Embroidery (Module 1)  by Gabriela Martínez Ortiz of Ofelia y Antelmo.

Intuitive embroidery has to do with letting the hand be free. In this workshop, I will share with you my process and my path in hand embroidery. I will teach you how to make the different stitches that I use the most in my work, along with all their application possibilities. We will talk about color selection, how to create visual effects by repeating patterns, and how to create interesting compositions. At the end, I will share a file with all the references seen in class, along with artists that inspire me, books, and my latest research that can complement what I have learned.

Kit includes: Embroidery kit (hoop, embroidery threads, a pack of needles, scissors, fabric), snacks, and drinks.

No prior embroidery experience is needed, we start from scratch and will be together for four hours! BYOB drinks and snacks are always welcome - we will have light bites and non-alcoholic drinks available throughout our time. Share this link with friends and family to share a creative day together!

Saturday, October 14, 10am-2pm at Indigo & Violet Studio - 1411 W. Irving Park Rd. Chicago, IL

Meet Gabriela Martínez Ortiz, 1989 of Mexico City and say hi on instagram @ofeliayantelmo!

Textile designer and artist, creator of Ofelia & Antelmo, a project that studies hand embroidery and its capabilities as a graphic protagonist in different formats.

I studied a degree in Textile and Fashion Design at the CENTRO de Diseño, Cine y Televisión University (2011-2015) and my work has been exhibited in galleries and art fairs in Mexico, Hong Kong, France, Chile, Colombia, England, Spain, and South Africa. Since 2019, I have dedicated myself to teaching embroidery workshops. I currently have three embroidery courses on the Domestika digital platform, each one listed as Top Sales, with more than 40,000 students enrolled.

Statement:

My work is governed by the philosophy of the Slow Movement, a cultural revolution that aims to calm human activities. A reaction against speed, valuing the enjoyment of processes and savoring life through the art of slow making. I have been a self-taught embroiderer since 2014, and the result of that slow walk has been the vehicle for new opportunities that have helped me find my creative voice. Mainly inspired by nature, my visual proposal is the result of the observation and exploration of organic forms through repeating patterns. Through my work, I am interested in observing the therapeutic effects in everyday life that hand embroidery offers, as well as its function as a tool for recording memory. In addition to textiles, I explore hand embroidery on surfaces such as paper, ceramics, and nature.
